Humidors are an investment, just as your cigars are, and knowledge of proper humidor care is essential to maintaining your investment. For example, when you are buying humidors, remember that they must be seasoned for ten days before it can be used to store your cigars. Failure to follow this step of humidor care could leave your cigars over-humidified or result in a lack of seasoning. It doesn’t matter how much quality the humidor is constructed with. If it is not properly seasoned, it will not perform correctly. In order to properly season a humidor, you will have two options.
Your first option will be to saturate the inside of your humidors with distilled water. The use of regular water can encourage the growth of mold. Your second option will be to purchase seasoning packets, designed for humidors, to place inside a more automatic solution in the Humidor. For humidor care, more individuals prefer the seasoning packets. The packets release an estimated 85% humidity into the air of their environment. It allows the wood in the humidors to become more saturated over a period of time versus simply rubbing it one or two times with distilled water. The entire purpose of seasoning is prevent the humidor from absorbing excess water once the cigars are placed into it.
If seasoning is not followed as one of the steps of humidor care, then your cigars can incur variations up to 70/70, due to lack of proper care. Variations can also occur from other instances besides seasoning. This list of instances includes seasonal changes, lack of humidity, change in location of the humidors, or the use of a poorly built humidifier. In order to prevent these changes, it is imperative that you educate yourself about all aspects of care for Humidors in order to take the fullest advantage of them.
